Step 1. Decide to cross over whatever Jordan River barrier is holding you hostage. Is it fear? Uncertainty and doubt? Are you battle weary?
Joshua 1:7 Above all, be brave and very courageous – very is a Hebrew word equivalent to our modern-day phrase – “be all in.” Courage by its definition requires us to go above and beyond our daily efforts; to take deep breaths, focus sharply ahead, and step across the barriers.
During my 6 A.M. drives to radiation treatment, I tend to let the radio scan for anything that will keep me awake. Yesterday, I heard a discussion on the issue of transgender males who have not physically transitioned but claim to be female being allowed in female restrooms. They cited several stories of sexual abuse associated with these permissions and then one of the personalities proclaimed, “Why aren’t we brave enough to speak up without worrying about what someone will think of us?”
Knowing our weaknesses as He does, the Lord God gives us the fortitude we need to bring the brave.
Step 2. Obey the Book – Do not turn from it to the right or the left, so that you will have success wherever you go. “Don’t blame me,” the Lord is saying, “if you don’t succeed.” Stay on track – obedient to God’s Word. Don’t turn right because the culture does; don’t walk left because it is unpopular. It is, He reminds us, the Book of instruction.
The Lord God knows the fickle mind of humans, that they will be courageous today, obey today, but forget tomorrow, and further instructs us to keep this word at the ready.
Step 3: Mediate on it (the Book of instruction) day and night, so that you may carefully observe everything written in it.” (v.8)
The word of God is precise in its language. Sometimes when I write, I find myself using non-essential descriptions, overly flowery terms. But here, we have amazing stories told with specific instruction. This book of instruction must not depart from your mouth; you are to meditate on it day and night so that you may carefully observe everything written in it. For then you will prosper and succeed in whatever you do.” No confusion in this message!
“Haven’t I commanded you; be strong and courageous? Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”
What’s the Jordan River you are facing today, this week, this year? However deep or stormy, determine to be brave, obey the Book, and believe the Lord God is with you wherever you go.
