There is something wonderful about a new year. The mystery of not knowing what’s next. The “maybe’s” that are dancing in my head. This January I am drawn back to the book of Joshua with the words “cross over.”
Now then, you and all these people, get ready to cross the Jordan River into the land I am about to give to them— Joshua 1:2
I hear these daily in my mind and I am wondering, “Cross over what? To where?” No idea. But the promises that surround this command are too exciting to ignore.
“Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; nor be dismayed,
for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”
I have written about these words before, but perched today on the edge of new adventures with the Creator, I have to share again.
Do not be afraid – The realities of home, work, the world. We take those blows and keep going because we have to.
Nor be dismayed -. These are the “what if’s” that spin us until we are dizzy with what we are sure are possibilities of the worst kind. These are the cripplers, the bondage that holds us captive.
Children’s author Shel Silverstein wrote this poem for kids that also speaks to every woman:
“Last night, while I lay thinking here,
Some Whatifs crawled inside my ear
And pranced and partied all night long
And sang their same old Whatif song”
Sound familiar? The command to “cross over” the Jordan River from “Whatif Land” to The Promised Land had little evidence of a good idea, but it came with sure promises that would make you want to at least try. On the other side of the Jordan was a land “for your own.” Think about that. Years of desert dwelling. Now God was promising prosperity and abundance just on the other side.
This Promised Land was not only about food or riches. He assured the people that “The Lord your God will give you rest by giving you this land.” (Josh 1:13) It was to be a place of rest for the soul, of freedom from the bondage their ancestors had lived under, and an end to a life of wandering. This land offered the respect these Israelites had never known. It was a permanent home where emotions could heal, hearts and relationships mend and grow strong, and God-confidence could reign.
Are you ready to cross over to the next adventure with God in 2022? Perhaps you have been afraid because the circumstance looks too big, too deep, too uncomfortable to cross. Joshua didn’t do it alone, and neither should you try it alone. Gather the women is not just our slogan; it is way of life for us. Who are your prayer partners? Who do you pray for and who prays for you?
